About Malaysia West
The Malaysia West cloud region is Microsoft’s first Azure region in Malaysia, located in Greater Kuala Lumpur. Announced as generally available in May 2025, this region was built as an AI-ready hyperscale cloud infrastructure. It offers three availability zones to ensure high availability, geo-redundancy, and in-country data residency. Strategically, the region lowers latency for Malaysian users, ensures compliance with local regulatory and residency requirements, and supports the government’s digital & AI ambitions.
⚙️ Facility Highlights
- Comprises three data centres forming the cloud region, each mapped to an availability zone.
- Each availability zone has independent infrastructure: power, cooling, and networking, allowing operation even if one zone experiences outage or disruption.
- Hyperscale design intended to support AI workloads, storage, compute, productivity, analytics, cybersecurity, etc.
- Designed for in-country data residency: data stored at rest in Malaysia.
- Part of Microsoft’s US$2.2 billion investment in Malaysia over four years for cloud and AI infrastructure.
🔐 Security & Compliance
- Provides in-country data residency, allowing compliance with Malaysian data protection laws and local regulatory frameworks.
- Built to Microsoft’s Trusted Cloud Principles, ensuring high levels of security, privacy, and compliance.
- Each availability zone has independent, redundant infrastructure (power, cooling, networking), minimizing the risk of localized failure.
🌐 Connectivity & Carrier Access
- Multiple availability zones connected via low latency, high bandwidth networking.
- Region is part of Microsoft’s global WAN backbone, enabling connectivity to other Azure regions and international services.
- Has public IP ranges and network presence (PoP) in Malaysia, enabling regional connectivity and network routing.
💼Who It Serves
- Enterprises that require local data storage & compliance (e.g. financial services, government agencies).
- Startups, scale-ups leveraging AI, analytics, compute, productivity cloud services.
- Public sector bodies in Malaysia needing cloud infrastructure aligned with national digital transformation policies and regulations.
- Organisations with global operations that benefit from low latency and connection to Microsoft’s global cloud backbone.
