CDC Data Centres: Hobsonville Campus Two
About Hobsonville Campus Two
Hobsonville Campus Two (also known as CDC Auckland 2 Hobsonville), operated by Canberra Data Centres (CDC), is one of New Zealand’s first hyperscale data centres located in the Hobsonville suburb of Auckland, on Westpoint Drive.
It’s strategically significant as part of CDC’s Auckland campus network (alongside Silverdale), built to support national critical infrastructure and serve both government and enterprise customers requiring high availability, data sovereignty, and premium connectivity.
Advantages include proximity to Auckland’s transport and telecommunications hubs, being carrier-neutral, and access to high-quality power and renewable energy sources.
⚙️ Facility Highlights
- The facility supports up to 14 MW of power capacity.
- It is hyperscale, “fit-for-purpose” design, employing “building within a building” architecture to accommodate modern equipment.
- Cooling uses a closed-loop cooling system, designed to minimize water usage.
- From day one operation, the centre is powered by 100% renewable electricity and is carboNZero certified.
- Sustainability features include almost zero water usage for cooling due to the cooling system design.
🔐 Security & Compliance
- The Hobsonville and Silverdale campuses are certified under the Public Cloud Data Centre Certification (PCDCC) led by New Zealand’s Government Chief Digital Officer, making them the first in NZ with that certification
- The facilities are built to support national critical infrastructure with high levels of physical and procedural security.
- From the earliest announcements, CDC emphasizes guaranteed availability and comprehensive physical and procedural security.
🌐 Connectivity & Carrier Access
- The site is carrier-neutral.
- Some of the first network service providers using the facility include Vodafone New Zealand, Vector, Kordia, and Feenix.
- The Hobsonville campus is listed in PeeringDB as having links to multiple carriers and exchanges; services such as MegaIX Auckland are present.
- Diverse fiber entry and strong interconnection capability are implied by statements about “high connectivity” and “interconnected ecosystem.”
💼 Who It Serves
- Government agencies seeking secure, compliant infrastructure in New Zealand (data sovereignty, regulatory assurance).
- Enterprises and national critical infrastructure operators requiring high availability, resilience and scalable hyperscale data services.
- Cloud providers, hybrid & multi-cloud operators, and service providers who need premium connectivity, carrier neutrality, and robust digital infrastructure.
