"It's been years since any of Denverite has ridden the Ski Train to Winter Park, and it seems like eons since cranes weren't a central figure in the Mile-High City's Skyline, but on the 26th: Union Station in Downtown Denver will reopen, Amtrak will return, new restaurants and new businesses will florish, and not since it first opened in 1881, will Denver see such fanfare: only this time we can thank tech Giant AECOM (among others) for giving this city, not just transportation speed, but data speed as well.
Christmas in July: Union Station All Dressed Up for the Holidays Reopens This Week

Opened in 1881, Union Station in the City of Denver, Colorado, is a landmark historical structure that was once the center piece of a great regional transportation network. In 2006, AECOM was on the winning team for a major public-private project that will result in one of the busiest, most dynamic urban centers in the world.

Along with the renovation of the historic terminal, the rebirth of Denver Union Station features new commuter rail, Amtrak, light rail and bus terminals, 1.35 million square feet of mixed-use development and new civic spaces. Working with construction partner Kiewit and design sub-consultants led by Skidmore and Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), AECOM has designed a transit hub from the ground up '” an earth-friendly effort that includes sky-lit concourses, green roofs, and a strong connection to the region's sustainability goals.

""Denver Union Station is an elegant combination of intermodal transit, joint development, and an exciting public realm,"" said Al Raine, AECOM's National Transit Oriented Development practice director. ""The project is the hub of Denver's FasTracks rail expansion. It anchors and seamlessly connects the two emerging smart growth neighborhoods in the heart of Denver '” Lower Downtown and the Central Platte Valley. In short, this is not just a landmark transit project, but a landmark city-building project '” one of the most important in North America.""

This new urban center and multimodal transportation hub has been a dream for the Denver community for many years. Under construction since 2010, the transit hub will become an operating reality in 2014. The first phase of private development, the IMA Financial Headquarters, broke ground in April 2012, to be followed by additional buildings in the months and years ahead.
