"Over 35 years ago, Black Box Network Services started off as a technology products catalog company and has now become a $1 billion communications and infrastructure services provider. Headquartered near Pittsburgh, PA Black Box currently employs more than 4500 people in 194 offices located in 141 counties, and currently has over 175,000 clients.

Starting in 1976 under the name Expandor, Inc., Black Box sold connectivity devices for clients to connect primary data communications products. The following year they launched a six-page catalog that contained only nine products and generated $170,000 in sales. In 1978, the company established the first of several international partnerships in Canada.

In the 1980s, the company officially changed its name to Black Box and won both the U.S. President’s “E Award” in 1982 and the U.S. Presidents “E-Star Award” in 1987. In 1992 Black Box went public (NASDAQ Global Select: BBOX) and two years later went on-line. The rest of the 1990s brought expansion through on-site data/infrastructure services in the Pittsburgh, PA area, Florida and the United Kingdom. Before the turn of the 21st century, Black Box was located throughout Europe and the Pacific Rim, gaining the company the tile “200 Best Small Companies in America” by Forbes.

From 2000 to 2005, Black Box expanded its on-site capabilities to include telephony services, increased its catalog to 1488 pages, was recognized as one of the “Best 100 Small Companies” by BusinessWeek, employed 3,000 workers, won the honor of “Catalog of the Year” at the Mulitchannel Merchant awards two years in a row, and offered more than 118,000 products in both its catalogs and on-line.

Further along into the new century, Black Box began to acquire many other companies including: Norstan, Inc.; Converged Solutions Group, LLC.; Communication is World Interactive Networking, Inc.; USA Commercial and Government; Canadian Operations of NextiraOne, LLC.; Nu-Vision Technologies, LLC.; Nortech Telecommunications, Inc.; ADS Telecom, Inc.; B&C Telephone, Inc.; AT&T’s Southeast Region NEC CPE Base; UCI Communications, LLC.; and Mutual Telecom Services, Inc.

In 2011 alone, Back Box stacked up several awards and accolades including Cisco Customer Satisfaction Excellence, Honda Supplier of the Year, Top 100 Integrator on VAR 500 list, Aspect Service Excellence Award, and many others.
