Google Acquires Cloud Startup With Data Center Expertise

Google has acquired CloudSimple, a startup that specializes in VMware virtualization software. The strategic move will allow VMware customers to run vSphere-based workloads on Google Cloud. The acquisition is an extension of Google's existing partnership with CloudSimple that was announced earlier this year. Both parties didn’t disclose financial terms.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Google Cloud as they welcome CloudSimple, a VMware Cloud Verified partner," said Ajay Patel, senior vice president, Cloud Provider Software Unit at VMware, in the blog post announcing the deal.

"With VMware on Google Cloud Platform, customers will be able to leverage all of the familiarity of VMware tools and training, and protect their investments, as they execute on their cloud strategies and rapidly bring new services to market and operate them seamlessly and more securely across a hybrid cloud environment,” added  Ajay Patel.

The Santa Clara, California-based startup is a leading provider of secure, high performance, dedicated environments to run VMware workloads in the cloud. Guru Pangal, CEO of CloudSimple, started the company with the "goal of enabling large sets of existing enterprise workloads to transition to the cloud – without disruption." Over the last 3 years, CloudSimple simplified the process by developing a micro-services based engineered platform that can scale across public clouds in multiple regions.

"The CloudSimple platform transforms bare-metal resources in public cloud data centers into “as-a-service” private clouds which can be fast-provisioned in an automated fashion. These private clouds are managed through a single portal, enabling customers to easily access all the public cloud services while benefiting from scalable monitoring, alerting, fault tolerance and 24x7 global support of their private clouds," said Guru Pangal in a blog post.

With the acquisition, Google aims to provide enterprises with a simple way to migrate those workloads to the cloud. The customers can migrate their VMware workloads from on-premises data centers directly into Google Cloud VMware Solution by CloudSimple, while also creating new VMware workloads as needed. They don't have to re-architect existing VMware-based applications and workloads. In addition to Google Cloud, CloudSimple also runs on the Azure platform. It’s unclear whether this will continue post-acquisition.
