  • Partnership with utilities to co-develop smart grid control systems 


Each campus is designed to operate at a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) below 1.1 and meet Meta’s goal of net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030


The Silicon Supply Chain: Nvidia, AMD, and Beyond 


Meta’s infrastructure will support an estimated 1.2 million GPUs by 2027, including: 


  • Nvidia H100s and H200s for training LLaMA and Emu 
  • AMD MI300X racks for inference and fine-tuning 
  • Custom Meta accelerators co-designed with TSMC for edge inference 
  • TPU and Graphcore compatibility layers for flexibility in open model research 


What’s new in 2025 is Meta’s shift toward rack-level integration. It’s no longer buying GPUs individually—it’s buying turnkey AI racks, pre-wired and software-loaded, ready to deploy within 30 days of arrival. 


These systems are tied into Meta’s internal AI stack, which includes: 


  • PyTorch 3.1 (co-developed with Microsoft and Hugging Face) 
  • FBLearner and Axolotl for fine-tuning and auto-evaluation 
  • The FAIR AI Training Scheduler (FATS) for optimizing job placement across clusters 


Cooling, Power, and Engineering Breakthroughs 


To manage the thermals and energy needs of modern AI workloads, Meta’s data center design teams have introduced several engineering breakthroughs: 


  • Full-facility immersion cooling for selected GPU halls 
  • Hot aisle containment with hydrogen loop recovery 
  • AI-powered thermal tuning of airflows using reinforcement learning 
  • Modular power management units with sub-millisecond switchover 


These innovations allow Meta to run dense compute jobs for longer durations without thermal throttling, downtime, or energy waste. 


One Indiana facility will process over 3 exabytes per week of training data—more than all of YouTube’s 2022 global video upload traffic. 


Why the Edge Buildout Is Crucial 


While most headlines focus on hyperscale training facilities, Meta’s edge expansion is equally significant. These sites enable: 


  • Fast inference for Meta AI’s chatbot across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram 
  • Low-latency rendering of AR overlays for Meta Quest and Ray-Ban Meta glasses 
  • Real-time translation for video and audio content 
  • Personal assistant inference tied to local user data (on-device + edge hybrid) 


Edge centers are being deployed in containers, cell towers, undersea cable landing stations, and co-located inside telecom exchanges. This allows Meta to serve hyper-personalized experiences without central latency bottlenecks


Each node includes: 


  • 2–4 H100s or equivalent AMD accelerators 
  • Flash cache for LLaMA embeddings 
  • FPGA-based post-processors for latency-sensitive ops 
  • Local carbon offset integration with solar or grid buffers 


Data Privacy and Regulatory Positioning 


As scrutiny around AI models, data usage, and geopolitical information flows intensifies, Meta is preparing for a decentralized privacy-first infrastructure model

  • Geo-fenced model hosting for complying with local AI laws 
  • Federated inference logs to minimize central data retention 
  • Zero-knowledge model proofs for third-party model integrity audits
