Saskatoon Internet Exchange

About Saskatoon Internet Exchange

Saskatoon Internet Exchange Inc. (operating as YXEIX – Saskatoon Internet Exchange) is a Canadian not-for-profit Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Incorporated federally on January 23, 2017 under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, YXEIX provides an open-access Ethernet peering fabric that allows ISPs, network service providers, content networks, and other eligible networks to exchange traffic locally using BGP, improving latency, resilience, and local traffic efficiency in Saskatchewan. YXEIX also operates shared community infrastructure services such as route servers, a public looking glass, NTP, a software micro-mirror, and access to a Microsoft Connected Cache via its services network.

⚙️ Facility Highlights

Data Center Footprint:

YXEIX publishes one public connection location: Innovation Place, 121 Research Dr, Saskatoon, SK (facility contact: info@yxeix.ca).

YXEIX also states its switches are located at Innovation Place and “two separate downtown locations.” A YXEIX media release (Dec 2019) describes the addition of a third location in downtown Saskatoon. Specific downtown facility names/addresses: Not publicly listed on YXEIX pages reviewed.

Facility Design & Infrastructure:

Data center facility specifications (power, cooling, security controls, rack/cage options) are facility-dependent and are not published as YXEIX facility specs; YXEIX directs participants to arrange cross-connects with the hosting facilities.

YXEIX’s exchange fabric technical details published in PeeringDB include jumbo MTU 9000 and Best Effort (no SLA) service level.

Service Portfolio Overview:

Internet Exchange / peering fabric (open-access Ethernet fabric; traffic exchanged via BGP).

Ports & speeds (published): YXEIX states 1Gbps and 10Gbps connections are $1200/year with a $250 one-time setup fee (includes SFP + patch cable), and it can accommodate higher speeds (noted as 10/25/50/100Gb on FAQ).

Route servers (with filtering expectations using IRR and RPKI ROA; published in PeeringDB notes).

Looking glass (published in PeeringDB for YXEIX Services ASN entry).

NTP (Stratum 2) service (clock.yxeix.ca).

Micro Mirror (local cache for software distributions; yxeix.mm.fcix.net).

Microsoft Connected Cache (MCC) access via YXEIX services network (peering instructions and tagging).

🔐 Security & Compliance

Infrastructure Resilience:

YXEIX does not publish data center-grade resiliency specs (power/cooling redundancy) for the hosting facilities. Not publicly listed.

Physical & Logical Security:

Physical security controls for the hosting facilities: Not publicly listed by YXEIX.

Route-server filtering posture is described publicly (IRR + RPKI ROA expectations for validation).

Compliance & Standards:

ISO/SOC or other formal compliance certifications for YXEIX operations: Not publicly listed.

🌐 Connectivity & Carrier Access

Carrier Neutrality:

Formal “carrier-neutral” statement: Not publicly listed. (YXEIX positions itself as a neutral meeting place for networks, but does not publish carrier-neutral facility terms as a directory-ready claim.)

Network Capabilities:

YXEIX operates an IXP peering LAN (PeeringDB lists IPv4 206.71.11.0/24 and IPv6 2001:504:69:8000::/64) and publishes technical contact emails in PeeringDB (e.g., noc@yxeix.ca, info@yxeix.ca).

YXEIX publishes a live peer table showing connected networks and port speeds (e.g., 1G to 100G+ entries).

Connectivity Use Cases:

Local Saskatchewan traffic exchange between ISPs, NSPs, CSPs, and institutions to improve latency and keep regional traffic local.

Access to shared community services (route servers, NTP, micro-mirror, MCC) via peering with YXEIX services ASNs where applicable.

💼 Who It Serves

Saskatchewan-based ISPs (Internet Service Providers), NSPs (Network Service Providers), CSPs (Content Service Providers), and other qualifying networks seeking local interconnection.

Public-sector, education, research, and enterprise networks participating as peers (examples listed publicly on the Peers page).
