About NewCastle Data Center

Located at 9 Cobalt Park Way, Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside (NE28 9EJ), near Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, Stellium’s Newcastle campus is a major carrier-neutral data centre hub designed for high-performance, low-latency and sustainable digital infrastructure. The campus occupies a prime position in the North East of England, which has been designated by the UK Government as an AI Growth Zone and benefits from one of the lowest grid-carbon intensities in the country.

Stellium has established the site not only as a large colocation and wholesale campus, but also as a landing station for submarine fibre cables linking the UK, the Nordics and the Atlantic – making the Newcastle site unique in terms of network reach and resilience.

With power capacity available in the tens of megawatts, a purpose-built fibre ring and modern infrastructure certified to industry standards, the campus is designed to serve enterprises, hyperscale cloud operators, carriers and other digitally-intensive users with stringent latency, connectivity and sustainability requirements.

⚙️ Facility Highlights

  • The campus was originally designed for up to 80 MWs of power, with scalability to around 180 MWs over time.
  • For example, one published building (DC3) is listed with a power capacity of 20 MVA at the 9 Cobalt Park site.
  • Certified as OCP Ready™ (Open Compute Project) – enabling modern rack and infrastructure deployments targeting HPC/AI/hyperscale workloads.
  • Extensive connectivity infrastructure: the campus hosts cable-landing station capabilities (e.g., for the NO-UK cable system and North Atlantic Loop) and a dedicated fibre ring spanning the region.
  • Designed in a cooler Northern climate, benefiting from lower ambient temperatures (rarely exceeding ~22 °C compared with hotter locales) which improves cooling efficiency.

🔐 Security & Compliance

  • The campus holds multiple certifications including ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 14001(Environmental Management), ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 20000 (IT Service Management), ISO 22301 (Business Continuity) and is rated BREEAM Excellent for sustainability.
  • Multi-layered physical security is in place, with the offshore cable-landing station and campus build-out offering enhanced resilience for network and data infrastructure.
  • The operator emphasises operational excellence, supporting high-availability SLAs backed by Tier III+ design principles.

🌐 Connectivity & Carrier Access

  • Carrier-neutral environment: multiple fibre providers, terrestrial and subsea links, direct connectivity to major global networks via the campus landing stations.
  • The campus is home to the UK’s Internet Exchange (NCL-IX) and offers high-capacity, low-latency interconnection for network operators, content providers and cloud platforms.
  • Cross-connect and hybrid-cloud support: the infrastructure supports advanced workloads, high-density deployments, HPC and AI applications, as well as retail colocation.

💼 Who It Serves

  • Hyperscale cloud providers and AI/ML enterprises requiring large-scale, high-density, low-latency infrastructure with global connectivity reach.
  • Carriers, content-delivery networks (CDNs) and communications service providers seeking a strategic UK node near international fibre landings and global backbone networks.
  • Enterprises in fintech, media, streaming, healthcare and research that need performance-sensitive hosting with strong connectivity, regulatory compliance and sustainability credentials.
  • Organisations seeking low-carbon footprint infrastructure in a cooler climate region, with solid connectivity options and modern infrastructure tailored to future workloads.
