T Systems: Barcelona Data Center
About Barcelona Data Center
The T-Systems Barcelona Data Center comprises a new Twin-DC private cloud region in Southern Europe, with two purpose-built sites in Sant Boi and Cerdanyola del Vallès, Catalonia. These facilities operate as a unified region under T-Systems’ “Future Cloud Infrastructure (FCI)” platform, expanding the company’s cloud offering into Spain and supporting its global footprint. These Barcelona sites are located within the metropolitan area of Barcelona, providing proximity to major business districts, transport corridors, and connectivity routes to Europe and beyond. Given their Tier-III design and modular build strategy, they are positioned to deliver high availability, scalability, and strong connectivity for enterprise, public sector, and critical industries across Spain and Southern Europe.
⚙️ Facility Highlights
- Tier III (Design & Construction) certified for the modular facility architecture
- Modular construction: initial deployment based on 38 integrated modules (modular container units) assembled on site
- Initial IT load capacity: 1.1 MW, with scalability toward 5 MW in future phases
- PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) target: 1.3 under full load
- Power protection: 3+3 UPS of 400 kVA each in modular segments
- Cold aisle containment and precision cooling systems, supporting both medium- and high-density layouts
- Fire suppression: Novec gas extinguishing system in modular zones
- Deployment speed: entire modular facility deployed in ~9 months (versus 24-30 months for conventional construction)
🔐 Security & Compliance
- The facility is designed to meet Tier III operational assumptions, implying redundancies and fault tolerance consistent with high availability standards
- Physical security, access control, monitoring, and modular segregation (via module containers) are embedded in the design (though public documents do not enumerate each security measure)
- The Barcelona region is part of T-Systems’ FCI, which emphasizes security and data protection built-in under its managed cloud framework
- Sustainability and climate commitments: the project is aligned with T-Systems / Deutsche Telekom’s goal of climate-neutral data centers, emphasizing efficient design and renewable energy usage
🌐 Connectivity & Carrier Access
- As a cloud region under T-Systems, the Barcelona data centers are tied into T-Systems’ network backbone and cross-regional interconnects via its FCI infrastructure
- The twin data centers operate virtually as one, enabling low-latency connectivity and redundancy within the local region
- Modular architecture supports flexible interconnection and cross-connect paths between modules and to external networks
- The Barcelona sites serve as the regional hub for cloud services, linking local enterprise connectivity, public sector networks, and T-Systems’ European cloud and data center network
💼 Who It Serves
