Shared Services Canada (SSC): EDC Barrie

The EDC Barrie facility is one of SSC’s four enterprise-grade data centres established to serve the federal Government of Canada’s application-hosting and IT infrastructure needs. Located in Barrie, Ontario, north of the Greater Toronto Area, the centre offers a strategic location with strong connectivity to core Canadian network hubs and a cooler climate conducive to efficient cooling operations. The facility is designed for high-availability, modern hosting and is a key element of SSC’s data-centre consolidation strategy to replace legacy centres with fewer, more efficient and resilient enterprise sites.

• The EDC Barrie facility is built to support maintenance without service disruption, meaning mechanical or electrical systems can be switched or serviced while IT operations continue. 
• It features at least two network-entry paths for redundancy of external connectivity.
• Designed with modern environmental management in mind, EDC Barrie meets or exceeds the government’s enterprise-data-centre standard and has achieved at least a LEED® Silver equivalent building certification. 
• The facility supports SSC’s enterprise-hosting model, enabling hybrid-cloud, shared-services and multi-tenant government application deployments within a consolidated, standardized infrastructure.

• Physical access is tightly restricted: only security-cleared, skilled employees access the facility, reducing risk of human error. 
• SSC’s enterprise-data-centres are designed to meet the Government of Canada’s security baseline of Protected B / Medium Integrity / Medium Availability (PBMM) and can support higher levels (e.g., Secret) where required via enhanced safeguards. 
• The facility is built to resilient standards: fire suppression systems, dual mechanical paths, electrical feeds for fault tolerance and continuous service operations.
