About Herne Data Center
The YEXIO Herne Data Center is a planned edge-data-centre development located in the Funkenberg Quartier district of Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The site is part of a sustainable infrastructure initiative by YEXIO (via HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions and investor Palladio Partners) and is designed to deliver locally-distributed compute capacity for IoT, AI, cloud and enterprise needs.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 and commissioning is targeted for mid-2027.
⚙️ Facility Highlights
- Initial capacity planned at approximately 2 MW of IT load, with expansion potential to 4 MW.
- Built in timber (mass-wood) construction to reduce embodied carbon and support sustainable architecture.
- Incorporates direct-water cooling systems and is designed to feed waste heat into the local district-heating network of the Funkenberg-Quartier.
- Features a green façade and architectural landscaping aimed at improving biodiversity and visual integration into the urban redevelopment zone.
- The location is within a 14-hectare redevelopment site (Funkenberg Quartier) on a former industrial footprint, aligning with smart-city and urban regeneration goals.
🔐 Security & Compliance
While full public specifications are still under development, the Herne facility follows YEXIO’s standard operating model:
- Multi-layered physical security including perimeter control, access authentication and monitoring systems.
- Redundant power and cooling systems designed for edge-reliability and efficiency.
- Compliance with German/EU data protection standards (e.g., GDPR-related, national IT-security frameworks) and sustainable building certifications.
🌐 Connectivity & Carrier Access
- Positioned in a region offering strong fiber infrastructure and network connectivity across the Ruhr & Rhine-area, enabling low-latency access for regional enterprises and edge workloads.
- Carrier-neutral design supports multiple fibre entry points, dark-fibre paths and local network on-ramps, making it suitable for enterprise, cloud and edge service providers.
- Its urban-edge placement makes it ideal for latency-sensitive applications, local data processing and smart-city deployment models in a German metropolitan environment.
💼 Who It Serves
- Enterprises and mid-sized firms looking for localised, sustainable infrastructure in Germany, particularly those with latency, sovereignty or edge-computing requirements.
- Cloud, SaaS and platform providers seeking distributed compute capacity closer to end-users and regional hubs.
- IoT, smart-city and AI/ML applications requiring edge-compute near data sources and local networks.
- Regulated and public-sector clients needing secure, energy-efficient, German-based facilities with modern cooling and sustainability credentials.
